KPK hunts down PDI-P politician implicated in bribery case

Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Firli Bahuri has confirmed that the antigraft body is still searching for Harun Masiku, an Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician and suspect in a bribery case implicating General Elections Commission (KPU) commissioner Wahyu Setiawan.

Harun allegedly bribed Wahyu with Rp 900 million to secure a seat in the House of Representatives. Harun has reportedly fled the country to evade arrest.

According to Firli, the KPK has communicated and coordinated with the Immigration Directorate General and other law enforcement officials to hasten the chase. “This is the procedure we will follow [cooperating with law enforcement officials] because immigration officials are the most familiar with those that enter and exit Indonesia,” Firli said on Monday.

 

Police investigate weapons smuggling in Papua

The Papua Police are investigating reports of weapons smuggling in Papua following shootings targeting personnel of the Indonesian Military (TNI) and police in the region.

According to Papua Police chief. Insp. Gen. Paulus Waterpauw, the police have received information that the perpetrators of the shootings had used weapons smuggled from abroad. The smuggling is suspected to have taken place along the borders of the country, including a route that extends from the Philippines, to North Maluku province, to Sorong in West Papua and then finally into Papua.

 

290 House members absent from plenary meeting

The House of Representatives held its first plenary meeting in 2020 on Jan.13,  and out of 575 House members, only 285 members attended the meeting. Among the 290 members absent was the House speaker herself, Puan Maharani.

During the plenary meeting, which was led by House deputy speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, the Gerindra Party, supported by the NasDem Party, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and the Golkar Party, urged the House to form a special committee responsible for addressing the financial fiasco faced by state-owned insurance company Jiwasraya.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government signs five agreements in agriculture, education, health, religion affairs, and counter-terrorism, including 11 investment deal in energy, telecommunication, port building, petrochemical, research and development, as well as oil & gas worth US$22.8 billion in total.

Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Pandjaitan said the UAE’s investment fund will be deposited in a sovereign wealth fund, together with investment funds from Japan-based Softbank’s and The United States’ International Development Finance Corporation (DFC). President Jokowi also asks Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed to participate in the development of Indonesia’s new capital city by becoming a member of the supervisory board.

 

Coal prices surge to highest level since September last year

The ICE Newcastle coal future price has risen by 5.64 percent to US$ 75.85 per ton, after being stuck in the sideways trend for four months. The change in Newcastle coal future price trend occurs due to a positive signal in the United States and China trade negotiations, in which both countries are expected to sign the phase one-trade agreement this week. The deal could become a turning point for global trade and manufacturing, which results in higher demand for coal.

 

Manufacturing sector growth decline in Q4 2019

Bank Indonesia recorded a decline in its Prompt Manufacturing Index (PMI) to 52.04 percent in the fourth quarter of 2019, from 51.05 percent in the previous quarter. Even though the PMI value indicated that the manufacturing sector was still in the expansion phase, it experienced a slowdown in production activities. BI spokesman Onny Widjanarko said nearly all subsectors maintained production expansion, with cement and non-metallic mineral processing recording the highest expansion rate. But there were two indicators that recorded contraction: the speed of inputs delivery at 49.71 percent and workers utilization at 47.23 percent.

 

Foreign tourists can use WeChat Pay now

China’s WeChat Pay finally received its operational license from Bank Indonesia and has been operating legally in the country since Jan. 1. BI approved WeChat Pay’s license after the foreign e-wallets finalized its cooperation with private lenders CIMB Niaga. However, WeChat Pay is only allowed to process foreign tourist’ payment transactions. BI payment system policy deputy director Ricky Satria said the government can collect data on foreign tourist’ spending now. On the other hand, China’s Alipay has not fulfilled the requirements to operate legally in the country.
